The Ukrainian intelligence agency (GUR) did not confirm whether Ukraine had shot down the plane, nor who was on board in an update last night. "The initial results of investigative actions, including preliminary data from the inspection of the scene of the incident, allow us to conclude that the aircraft was attacked by an anti-aircraft missile from the territory of Ukraine," it concluded. "During the inspection of the scene, fragmented human remains and aircraft flight recorders were discovered," a committee statement read. Russian officials said yesterday that 74 people, including 65 Ukrainian personnel, were on board, but Ukraine has said it is unaware of any of its people being present. The committee said "more than 60 captured Ukrainian military personnel" were killed alongside six crew members and an unspecified number of Russian soldiers. Russia's investigations committee has released an update on the crashed plane - claiming it was downed by a Ukrainian missile. The head of the British Army said UK citizens should be "trained and equipped" to fight in a potential war between NATO and Vladimir Putin's forces. His comments come after those of the Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Patrick Sanders, who suggested British men and women could face a call-up to the army in the event of a war with Russia. He's not the only one who thinks as much. So that means our armed forces have got to have the numbers, the capabilities, the logistics, the training needed." "That means being ready for the worst case, which is war with Russia. "So there is a real threat to peace in the Euro-Atlantic region - and the way to preserve peace is deterrence, effective military deterrence, conventional and nuclear," he said. Sir Richard said that even if Russia was defeated in the war against Ukraine, it is going to remain determined to rebuild another Russian empire, determined to subjugate Ukraine, and once it's done that, determined to move on to other countries in the former Soviet space, which includes the Baltic states, all members of NATO. Watch part of his interview with Sky News here. "Britain's armed forces have traditionally and culturally relied on long service volunteer highly professional soldiers with huge experience - and that is really the way we would all want it to go on." He told Sky News: "Conscription to most professional soldiers, and I count myself as one, is absolute anathema. General Sir Richard Sherriff, ex-deputy supreme allied commander of the military organisation, warned that the UK defence budget is not big enough to expand the armed forces alone. It's time to "think the unthinkable" and consider introducing conscription to ready the country for a potential land war, Britain's former top NATO commander has said. Viktor Orban, Hungary's leader, says he is personally keen to see Sweden join, but that members of his party are yet to agree. With Turkey's approval now sorted, Hungary remains the last member of the alliance to agree - but a vote on the protocols for Sweden's NATO accession hasn't yet appeared on the Hungarian parliament's agenda. It has since sought a series of concessions from Stockholm, including moves to counter Kurdish militants. Sweden, along with Finland, abandoned its traditional position of military nonalignment to seek protection under NATO's security umbrella, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.įinland joined in April last year, but Turkey initially accused Sweden of being too lenient toward groups that Ankara regards as security threats. This brings to an end a more than 18-month delay for Sweden, which was frustrated by countries like Turkey failing to formally ratify it. Turkey has officially ratified Sweden's membership in NATO, meaning the Nordic country is a step closer to joining the alliance.
